Research OverviewResearch Overview

To clarify the effects of the internal structure of fluids on the dynamics of complex fluids.

Fluids containing polymers, wormlike micelles, fine particles became complex fluids. Since these molecules or aggregates of molecules are larger than solvent, they produce internal structures inside the fluids. These internal structures are soft, unstable, and non-uniform, and their behavior inside the fluids affect dynamics of complex fluids.

Our purpose is to understand the characteristic flow regimes of complex fluids in terms of the interaction between internal structures in the fluids, and between internal structures and fluids.

To achieve this purpose, we observe and quantify the dynamics of complex fluids at multiple length scales. For example, the microrheology technique to quantify the internal structure of the fluid, 2D flows at the meter-length scale and various experimental systems using microfluidic devices to observe flow characteristics.
